Signs of Unstable Snow

Observations

We skinned up to about 10,000' on the north Galena Ridge, skied down to the skin track at 7,600', and skied up the south Galena Ridge to the knob at 9,824'. We stuck to fairly conservative choices, skiing the main north ridge, and a small sub ridge to the north off the south ridge knob, and didn't observe any instabilities.

In all of our 5k of skiing we saw nothing but amazing weather and great snow. No wind even on the exposed ridge lines above the tree line. Rapidly warming temps in the sun seemed to be creating a bit of a sun crust on south facing slopes above 9,000'. The coverage was surprisingly good, as long as we stuck to the north facing slopes.
